Cars keep getting more difficult to repair. Mechanics' salaries keep going down. Most people expect something for nothing. On top of being underpaid, repair profession has lost all its glory. Very few people consider this a desirable career anymore. In some other countries mechanics are well paid, highly educated professionals. In the US and Canada the climate is very negative for smart, professional and talented people to choose car repair as a rewarding and profitable career.
As a result, car repair business became more trouble than it's worth. People don't accept responsibility, have unreasonable expectations and don't want to spend the money to get professional service. What they get in return is mediocre at best. ASE certification is a joke. Mechanics wages are dismal. If you get a good quality repair, consider yourself very lucky. Most of the time good results are based on good personal ethics of the person doing the work and not a combination of objective factors, such as good pay and proper education.
I see problems caused by improper service all the time. And not just at SAAB dealers. Poor service is the norm. I have zero confidence whenever I must go to a shop to get anything done. I double and triple check everything. Almost 100% of the time I find problems. This does not happen often, as I do almost everything myself these days. Ever since I started doing that, I stopped having trouble with my cars.
