they are so competitive these days, I almost think they are all the same. Given your price range, you are probably talking about 3+ mega pixel cameras. So round up all models and pick the features you want, look for something with a large and bright display.
I favor the Nikons and Canons, their optical lenses tend to be better as in their non-digital camera line. I would look for something with a longer optical zoom range. I think Nikon has a few models that has a 4X optical zoom instead of the usual 2X or 3X. As for digital zoom, it sounds to me the manufacturers are playing mind games, you can always do digital zoom on your computer. You also want to consider the size and weight of the camera as well.
Also check what actually comes with the camera as the price of the accessories, as bits and pieces do add up, an extra memory card, a carrying case, an extra rechargable battery, an integrated charger and mount for download etc..
