I just got my second digital camera. I started with a basic, fixed-lens 1.3 megapixel Olympus, which for the past few years has done me well.

The big three for digital cameras are Nikon, Canon, and Olympus. A *GREAT* site for camera reviews is http://www.dpreview.com; check for the detailed reviews with sample images.

My new camera is the Olympus C-740, a brand-new model as of March. It's 3.2 megapixel, has full manual features (but an "auto" mode for quick shots), and a *10x optical zoom,* which is why I picked it specifically. Too many times I was caught too far away from my subject with my old camera, so the optical zoom was the thing I wanted most, aside from more megapixels. Sure, you've got to hold it steady at full zoom, but it's not hard to take great shots and so far (after a week) I've been very happy. This is the largest zoom I could find for the price ($390 online). Everything else with such a high zoom multiplier was over $1500! Olympus lenses are known for high-quality, as well.

Memory is something to consider, too--my new camera uses the relatively new xD memory, which is TINY, but kind of pricey. Hopefully the prices are coming down soon, though ...

There are tons of good cameras out there in that price range, so look around before you buy! You can get some nice feature sets for that range. Good luck!
