Here's what I looked for:
USB or fire wire (easy to hook to the computer for the whole family)
Software (How easy to get the pictures from the camera to the computer)
3 Mega pixel or more (gives ability to print "photo quality" 8 X 10)
Cost of memory. (I have 128 Mb in mine Have never run out but have been more than 1/2 full)
Ability to use different lenses (I have a telephoto and a Macro)
Ability to use an external flash (Lets you do studio quality work)
Manual control option (play with exposure or shutter speed if you want)
Optical zoom is better than digital (you can digital zoom later)
Movie mode with sound (great if you have relatives across the country and want to send "movie clips" e-mail to let them see the newest thing their grandchild did.
I ended up going with the Sony DSC-S75. It has a Carl Zeiss lens on top of all the other features. The Sony software is cross compatable, I have since bought both my daughters lower end Sony cameras and they just plug them in to the same USB cord as mine and can perform the same photo effects, which is half the fun of digital photography. Also look at the cost of extra batteries, I shure would hate to pay more for a new battery pack than the "toy" cost to buy. In 2 years of ownership we have taken 4500 pictures (yes the camera keeps track) and the only bad ones were operator error.
