Whoops! Too late!
Yeah, the same guys who trash the 0W-40 for being "too thin" want a "thicker" xW-30 from whatever their favorite brand is. I mean, c'mon! Viscosity's a "sliding scale," not a fixed point. It's only the SAE classification system which fixed into "viscosity steps." I think the 5W-30 "piston slap" issues all deal the GM LS-1 engines, which is a known "feature" of this engine (that's why users are mixing 10W-30 with 15W-50 for these engines).
If you search for my "Mobil 1 0W-40 abuse" thread over there, you'll find that nearly all of the 0W-40 UOAs are from turbo vehicles. (It may have changed since my initial research, but I think that's still true even now.) The few UOAs I could find from normally aspirated engines showed excellent results. Turbos WILL beat up oil faster than N/A engines, which is why it's important to start out with a better grade.
Mobil makes Saab's 0W-30 Full Syn, but (right now) only the Saab oil meets GM-LL-A-025 while Mobil's own 0W-30 doesn't. The additive packages between the two are slightly different. However, both meet ACEA A5 for extended drains, while the 0W-40 meets the better-for-turbo ACEA A3 requirements.
