Dehydration is a big contributor to kidney stones as this concentrates the chemicals that create the stones. Kidney stones are a world of hurt! Women who have had them often state that childbirth is less agony.
Soft water contributes to kidney stones. Counterintuative? Yes. Calcium is in the water you drink and use for cooking. If you have enough calcium with your meals, then this will bind in the gut to produce insoluable calcium oxilates. So the oxilates will be trapped in the stool and will not form in the body and cause problems in the kidneys. Calcium oxilate stones are the most common, 75% of cases or more. People with water softeners or with naturally low hardness water supplies are at higher risk. And those who don't drink enough water are at greater risk.
And you thought that I was only a wrench head. I learned the above the hard way.
