Unless you have a specific renal malady or you are engaged in heavy work in a hot environment, that much water is not needed. As a physician I have been astounded how this myth has taken off. The Berkely Wellness Letter (an excellent data-based resource for all kinds of health info) recently had an article about this isue. They also pointed out the absence of any demonstrated benefit of bottled water over water from the tap. A great marketing campaign by the bottled water inustry was the most likely source of this misbelief
