People are correct that 802.11g won't get you anything for communication through your cable/DSL link. It can get you something just within the wireless network (e.g., home server, large file loads, etc.) where you aren't bottlenecked by the connection to the Internet.
That said, a home network with a couple people using it isn't going to use up the 11 Mbps in the b standard.
I just put in a Netgear wireless router with 4 port hub that connected to my existing DSL modem. I went with the g version not because of speed but because that router used Stateful Packet Inspection and the b version didn't, giving a little more security to the firewall function.
It works at 54 Mbps with a Dell D400 using their TrueMobile internal b/g card.
