It's the whole conservation of momentum thing. One of Newton's laws.
Big smashing into small is never good. That's why motorcycles always lose.
But you can rest assured that SUVs crashing into regular cars in Europe isn't such a big deal. The percentage of SUVs is small and the costs associated with SUV ownership are major impediments (i.e. petrol, road taxes etc).
So in a sense one can't blame the SUV drivers for having bigger rigs. It's allowed by law, it's encouraged by very low gas prices and its a major status symbol. So why not own the vehicle that gives you the best shot at surviving a crash ? It's not a Saab, it's a Hummer or a Suburban or their ilk.
Your Saab gives you the best chance for withstanding a crash with an SUV in its weight category. Much better than a Jetta. But a Buick Century will still serve you better. It's a mass thing.
In Canada, where I live, gas prices are twice the US. We still have piles of SUVs, but I gather it is less than the US. Just like we have more compacts sold than in the US. But in Europe, were the price is 3 to 4 times the US, the number of SUVs plummets.
There is some equilibrium where gas prices, size of vehicle, tippiness etc. all balance out. WHo knows, maybe it is Portugal ?!
