I can say that the Saab is safer in many ways. I have a Jeep Comanche, from which the Cherokee is based (they slap a top on the Comanche and add some seats). When I'm in my Jeep, I go slower than I would in my car, I keep longer distances between me and the vehicle in front of me, I realize that the vehicle is heavy (no 30 mph turns in the snow/wet), and I try to make myself realize that the vehicle handles poorly. The Saab's brakes are so much better than my Jeep's, the handling isn't comparable, the Saab has rear fog lights and driving lights, it understeers, etc. Even in snow, I think the Saab out-handles and out-performs my truck (although I'll probably drive the truck more, so it takes the salt and other grit).

What I don't understand is why many people drive their SUVs/trucks like smaller vehicles. I can't tell you how many SUVs/Dodge RAM monster vehicles I've had glued to my bumper at 80 mph highway or over the speed limit on a small two-lane road. Don't they know that they can't stop as fast as my car can? I was followed by a Dodge RAM for part of my drive from PA to CT, and the thing would tailgate me every time it caught up to me (I'd lose it every time I got an opening). Most SUV drivers scare the crap out of me, as they tend to drive aggressively and too fast for conditions.
