How many accidents are caused by mechanical vs. driver error? I don't know the answer, but my guess is 97+% of accidents are the result of driver distraction, driver incompetance, driver impairment, driver not checking the air pressure in their Firestone tires more than every two years, etc. When is the car owner going to take the act of driving seriously? When are state licensing bureaus going to take testing and licensing of drivers seriously? Until that day happens, no amount of car regulation, new requirements for manufacturers, or limiting of car choice thru taxation will change the accident rate. When drivers stand up and take responsibility for their own actions, instead of relying on a nanny-istic government to do it for them, then and only then will the accident rates improve.
