Rutgers University's Douglas Coates and James VanderHoff have published a study examining the relationship between traffic fatalities and light truck/SUV use from 1994 through 1997. Their conclusion (published in Spring 2001 edition of Regulation magazine) indicates that the increased use of light truck use in the US has helped to reduce motor vehicle fatalities.
I haven't read their study yet, so I'm just a messenger here. Here's the link to their study. Suggest the first person whose read it and wants to begin a discussion (agree, disagree, devil's advocate, etc) do so in a new General thread.
