I agree with you in regards to Japanese cars being copies of other. This is what they do. They take the benchmark and try improve upon it. You correctly name attempts where they have not been successful. I feel they do much better in the sedan market.
But you make it sound that the British are solely responsible for the creation of the sports car. I think that companies like Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, Alfa, Lancia, Bugatti, Maserati, etc. and styling houses of Pininfarina, Bertone, and Karmann have done their share in the development and growth of this industry.
For me exterior and interior styling are part of the whole package. The Pontiac Aztec is supposed have excellent handling/comfort in its class. It is also inexpensive. I would still not take one if given to me.
There are many companies who can incorporate design and performace, and I don't see that here.
