The first generation Taurus was a huge hit. It was the #1 selling car for years after its inception in 1988, and Toyota and Honda were left gasping.
Then came the second generation with all the ovals and a bigger price tag. The car felt smaller inside and cost more! Toyota and Honda pounced on this, and became the #1 and #2 sellers. The Taurus became a rental car. This was the single biggest automotive blunder in automotive history.
The third generation is a pretty good car, but it never caught on, and Camry and Accord are the leaders still.
Ford blew it... big time! Ford simply didn't listen to the customer, and lost tremendous market share that they'll only get back if Toyota and Honda (and Nissan) stumble (which they seem to never do).
