If you are staying in the times square area I would suggest getting out of that area for dinner. What you will find in times square is restaurants that a driven by tourist traffic so what you end up getting is overpriced mediocre food. A short cab or subway ride in any direction will get you much better results. There are lots of nice places along central park and that is fairly close to where you will be. Much more quiet also.
Getting a cab will be a real test in that area also so...keep that in mind. You may want to walk a few blocks out of times square and try most likely with better results.
As a sidenote...please don't think that times square is what Manhattan is all about. Too many people go to NYC for the first time and stay in this area and have a bad experience and go away thinking that NYC sucks. While times square is an integral and highly recognizable part of Manhattan, it attracts the most tourist traffic and with this comes the scam artists, pickpockets and other undesirables. Just keep that in mind. However, the city and in particular that area was cleaned up quite a bit by the Guiliani regime and it shows.
It's been 5 years since I lived there so I won't try and recomend any place in particular...because my memory of how to get to any place is foggy and things change quickly.
Have fun!
