I agree with the posters that say avoid Times Square at all costs. Quick story—I live down in the Village and one of my old HS buddies was in town for his parents 50th anniversary. I met him and his family for dessert on Saturday night at some Irish bar in TS. I didn’t want dessert so I ask the waitress for a half and half; Guinness and Harp for those that don’t know. The waitress says sorry, no Harp tonight. I say OK how bout a black and tan then? She returns and says here you go, ½ and ½! I’m like, cool. I drink one, then another. The family leaves, and we head to the bar (in the same place). I order my fourth ½ and ½ and I see the bartender pouring me a half BUD!!! and half Guinness. That’s how they treat tourists in Times Square. Now that I’ve vented, here are my recs. These places never let me down and aren’t too far from the crossroads:

-Keens Steakhouse 72 W. 36th st. btw. 5th and 6th ave.—Great steaks, chops and single malt scotches. Olde New York atmosphere. http://www.keenssteakhouse.com
-Beacon 25 W. 56th st. btw. 5th and 6th ave.--- Wood fired oven, new American, nice room. I go there for special occasions.
-Sparks Steakhouse 210 E. 46th st. btw. 2nd and 3rd ave. Clubby, great steaks and wine list.
-Maloney and Porcelli 37 E 50th st. btw. Madison and Park. Good bar and good pork shank. http://www.maloneyandporcelli.com

Those 4 places will run about $60 pp.

Cheaper alternatives:

-John’s Pizza 260 W 44th st. Btw. B’way and 8th ave. –Not the best, but very good NY style coal-oven pizza. See what you’re missing in CA.
-Virgil’s BBQ 152 W 44th st. btw. B’way and 6th ave. Not authentic Southern BBQ but not bad either. Lotsa tourists.

You can’t go wrong with any of LA Gene’s recs either if you decide to venture downtown. Let us know where you wind up.
