very few places I know of here pay their mechanics salaries.

It's a fight for hour by hour. If the mech brings one hour in for the shop, the owner give the mech a part of that hourly rate. Usually at an independant shop it's about 40% to the mech. At the dealer it's more likely around 20-25% .

So would you like the dealer mechanics to learn the new cars by trial and error method instead of having them sent to a facility for the heads up on the new cars?
