For arguement's sake - What's safer - making it up the hill the first time, or having to back down and try again while others (idiots) try to get around? I don't totally agree that Fwd is better. Steep hills and deep snow change the story completely.
I guess its a question of what you need 90% of the time. 90% of the time I'm not driving in hellish blizzard conditions.
I beleive that many people with AWD think its a silver bullet. It causes them to ignore their tires. I've seen so many Audis, Subies, SUVs etc with near bald summer tires in the winter.
