Don't forget stability control

I think the ultimate solution for cost, weight, safety, fuel efficiency is FWD with stability control. AWD helps you go faster in conditions that you shouldn't drive fast in so FWD is fine in this respect. The focus of AWD is making you GO in adverse conditions. The focus of stability control is to help you stay in CONTROL in adverse conditions which is what active safety is all about. Also, AWD takes up more space, wastes fuel due to extra weight and driveline losses, as compared to FWD. AWD is probably one more thing to worry about when it comes to repairs and maintenance, although I don't know how reliable stability control systems are.
