I filled out a Police Report (which in itself should be pretty convincing, bearing in mind the penalties for filing a false one!). When the appraiser viewed the damage, it was also consistent with a hit and run. In fact, I had moved the car before I noticed the damage, because it was all to the passenger side. From the damage you describe to your car, it should not be too difficult to get them to see it could only have occurred due to a hit and run. Your car was not remotely drivable, so the only way you could have got it there would be if you had towed it there... and to have done the damage yourself, you would have to have been driving (very quickly!!!) in reverse. From what you describe, the damage to your car is likely to be over $2,000+, assuming it's just bodywork and suspension. Since the car is front wheel drive, I would also have some concern about the driveshaft having been pushed into or torn away from the transmission by the impact. If that's the case, probably figure another $2,000+... The appraiser will just look at the obvious stuff, but before the bodyshop gets started, see if you can confirm if there is a lot of other damage... Bodyshops have been known to 'miss' *cough* other damage until they have repaired the obvious stuff... (if the transmission is toast, you may not want to repair the car, or the insurance Co. may not want to repair it - the bodyshop will obviously be happier if the car DOES get repaired.)
