I lived in Germany for 2 years, and returned to the US 18 months ago. I enjoyed cruising on the autobahn between 110 and 120 MPH,where the Saab really felt enjoyable. Fuel efficiency was between 20 to 23 MPG, which was great. Plenty of power to accelerate, but slow enough to allow slower drivers to get out of your way. I found myself constantly on the brakes when trying to go faster than 120 MPH when there was any traffic. Rarely did I ever have a chance to cruise at 140 plus MPH, due to traffic, weather, etc. Regardless, faster traffic has to be aware of slower traffic ahead. I remember approaching a car while I was doing 135 MPH. The car was a Fiesta that accelerated out to 90 MPH or so while passing a large truck. It pulled suddenly into my lane, and I was forced brake hard to avoid a collision. My father was visiting and he asked why the Fiesta did not speed up. I told him that the Fiesta was probably maxed out at 90 MPH. I backed off and let the Fiesta pass the truck and then proceeded on my way. Many people cannot afford the faster cars, or don't buy them because they need or want something with better fuel economy, etc. Yet they pay taxes and have earned the right to be on the autobahn. Most drivers of slower vehicles are aware of the faster traffic and get out of the way. Some take their time to "make a statement." Occasionally some freeze and panic. Some are oblivious. The faster driver must show restraint and patience in all cases, but sometimes they don't. Obviously the Police thought Rolf did not show enough restraint and patience. Unfortunately everyone loses in this situation.
