87 Octane vs. premium

The biggest difference in the octane rating is for the engine knocking characteristics. I can't remember all the details from my college days, when I took the Internal Combustion Engines course. Turbo's run at much higher pressure than normal aspirated engines. Higher pressure has more tendency to knock. You also need to advance spark with the higher pressure. You can advance the spark 'more' with 93 octane. That is why Saab turbo's recommend premium gas. But I find that with APC control, which senses knock and reduces pressure accordingly, you would lose 'peak' power. For everyday, sedate driving, where you are not requiring full boost, you shouldn't see much difference. I run both, depending on gas price (if less than $0.15 diff between 87 & 93). I can't say that one gas gives better mileage. Even under heavy acceleration, 87 octane seems to perform just as well. It's just that I don't 'feel' as good. Someone who has scientific evidence can say otherwise. But I think why most people who put 93 octane is that they feel they are giving their best to their faithful steed.
