One of the mags did a test, where the same driver took each car around a track multiple times and they used the best time. The M3 did surprisingly poorly because of its weight and because the rear end likes to kick out. The driver had to do sliding turns in order to get the fastest times. The M3 was beat by the Porsche Boxter S (250hp but lighter and nimbler) and beat or matched by vehicles that surprised me. The fastest car was a Ferrari or something similar.
Having said that, I wouldn't trade my Viggen for an M3. I love to be able to haul things and still be able to cruise up snowy roads in the winter.
