I don't know about equities. My IRA lost well over 50 % of its value during the last stock market crash and has come nowhere close to getting back to its initial level. My 401k hasn't been doing too bad, but nowhere near 11% per year. The last couple of years, I've been happy to not lose money. Currently, the hot thing is real estate. I bought a house recently and the house had improved 10 percent per year compounded yearly. That's a good return on investment, although real estate also is going to take a hit soon (so, yes, I'm buying high most likely).
