He's right - get your retirement sorted out first, IMHO. Also, check the penalties (if any) for taking it out of a 529 plan later, just in case. One of my boys only went to college for one year and the other one is in JC, heading for Cal State, both of which are pretty cheap. I had put some money into a "gift to minors" trust years ago and ended up with a tax hit when I reclaimed the excess money after the college exenses turned out to be much smaller than what I had allocated. The reclaimed money went into a good mutual fund for the parents' retirement.
