or some ridiculuous amount greatly outstripping inflation. a 529 is a great choice with a big chunk of that money( with a break on your state taxes to boot- at least in NY), but having just looked into anticipated college costs in 17 years for my daughter, 15k invested today in a moderately aggressive manner will probably cover one year( maybe 1 and a half) at a NY state school. vanguard.com has some useful info on 529 plans and calculators to estimate college costs etc.
