They make 'slick' tires that you can put on if you are mostly plan on riding on gravel roads/paved paths, but if you want to hit the single track and you quickly install you nobby tires and go anywhere.
I have rented (vacation) hybrid, and did not like them becasue they were so upright. If you came from a road bike the aggressivence of a mtn bike should not bother you.
Just my 2 cents.
My mtn bike is 9 years old and i never plan on replacing it, but GT is what i have always owned, but now-a-day you can get a GT at Wal-mart. So i think the name has gone downhill.
