You'd be silly to take anybody's word for what exact mountain bike to buy. Geometry varies greatly as do other aspects, so the only way to get the perfect mountain bike is to test ride until you find one. For light mountain use, I'd reccomend a deore LX drivetrain, and insist on a brand-name fork, not a low-ender like Suntour or RST. You can probably save weight and price by going for a hardtail. For light mountain riding I'd possibly reccomend a set of ritchey megabite tires, they work well on trails or dirt roads.

'93 Gary Fisher HooKooEKoo (converted to singlespeed, with upgraded fork).
'99 Schwinn Moab (Full XT 8-speed kit)
'93 Specialized Allez Epic with a 14-speed 105 setup.
