From my pov, this is not the 'answer' to auto industry problems, this *is* the problem - emphasis on 'how can i make this cheaper', not 'how can i make this better'. I will pay for better; won't pay for cheaper. One beats the competitor by having a better product, not cheaper product; i mean, do you choose between two similarly priced cars based on which one you like more or which one saves you $1000 divided over x years?
Interchangeable plug-n-play parts are horrifying imo because it fosters a lowest common denomonator attitude => instead of 'we can use this saab widget in the cavalier' you get 'lets use this cavalier widget in the saab'. Great! Sign me up for big bulky plugged-in appearance crap everywhere, rather than designing a part to fit the car, or at least that car brand. Granted $0.50 saved per widget x 200,000 units sounds like savings on the spreadsheet, but does it really if it also affects consumer demand for product? But that's just my opinion.
