..in the US. They lost their most dramatic market share as Olds, Chevy, Buick, and Pontic offered nearly identical models with minimal sheet metal differences.
Now look at GM -- for the most part they are making their money with unique and fairly decent new models from Cadillac, Pontiac, even Chevy with its new Equinox & SSR.
Just like the Corvette now underpins the new Cadillac sport coupe -- GM will continue to do this.
Even Daimler Chryler -- the old E series has become the basis for the new Chrysler 300/Dodge Magnum, the old SLK had become the Crossfire.
Lutz is right. The car is not the pieces themselves -- its the way they are put together. The Saab convertible is one gorgeous looking car. Do you think for a moment anyone is going to think "Malibu Maxx" components? No -- its a wonderful Saab!
