I think it's when the owners take it on the highway that they get upset with the mileage. They are built and optimized for stop and go driving. The fuel savings is when the vehicle is stopped, then engine shuts off. During highway driving, the engine never shuts off, so it's gets similar economy to a regular compact car. Taking one on a road trip would be a waste of time.
