The point is there is lots of demand Posted by Ken [Email] (#2113) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ken) on Sun, 13 Jun 2004 21:21:37 In Reply to: OT: article on dealer markups on Toyota Prius, JLowe, Thu, 10 Jun 2004 06:01:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The best observation in this thread is that there is a HUGE unmet demand for hybrids, contrary to the assertions of the Big 3 and the Bush administration. If production could be ramped up to meet demand, several things would happen:
1 - outsized dealer profits would be eliminated
2 - the real economic payback to driving such a car would be vastly decreased
3 - higher production volume will enable the the production costs to drop, and also allow more vehicles to be driven in more conditions to facilitate product quality improvement
Hybrids will continue to evolve and improve, and with their improvement will come further market acceptance, and ultimately a much lower dependance on middle eastern oil. This refreshing development will enable the US to disentangle itself from the Saudi and other middle eastern monarchies, and the eventual democratization of the middle east shold help alleviate fanaticism directed againt us.
I am thrilled by the development of and demand for hybrids, they have a real place in our society, and dollars spent further refining them are one of the best investments we can make as a nation. If the formidable challenges of fuel cells can ever be solved, no one will regret investing R&D dollars to perpetuate the hybrid love affair. Its kind of like renewable energy sources - some of the most promising technologies are not cost effective yet (a la fuel cells) but that shouldn't stop one from starting to save energy TODAY by installing compact fluorescent lightbulbs immediately. As a nation we have a long way to go before our 5% of the total population stops consuming 25% of the world's energy, we don't need to wait for some magic bullet on the horizon in order to start fixing that grotesque problem.
