Just did a little calculation. (I know fuel costs will change but you need something to be fixed for any calculation to make sense.)
If you assume a hybrid will average 40 mpg, over 15,000 miles it will use 375 gallons of gas. At $2.10/gallon this is $788 dollars/year.
If you take a gas-engined car that averages 25 mpg, it will use 600 gallons which will cost $1260 a year. So the savings is $473/year.
Hybrids seem to be about $1000 or so more expensive than comparable gas-only cars, so you break even 2 years out. But since dealers are hosing people for, say, an additional $6 grand, the real breakeven comes in about 13 years.
Are people really this gullible?
I wonder what the ratio of lease vs buy deals are going on with the Prius? Leases would make the price difference seem smaller.
