After reading all of the responses to the original message, I realized they were mostly rants - and - they were rants about one particular car.
Think back a few years ago about what people thought about turbos - makes the engine run too hot, blows head gaskets, undriveable because of lag, turbo bearings fail, yada yada... These were based on opinions formed by reviews of the early Saab 99s or Buick Grand Nationals. Anyone who drives a recent vintage Saab knows these problems (and they were real) have been reduced if not outright eliminated.
The hybrid technology is in its infancy. The new Prius is soooo much better than the previous version that you wonder what further refinements can be made to the technology. The posts comparing costs (and styling?!?!) only apply to the current model. Who knows if further development can reduce costs even further. The rants about the costs of replacing batteries at 100k+miles has obviously not had to maintain a Saab of similar mileage! The Prius itself is not the car for me, personally, but I am facinated by the technology and potential applications.
Just think, wouldn't hybrid technology be great for a Saab turbo engine. The electric motor would be there to overcome the lag on startup, the turbo could provide that blast of mid-range torque when needed and it could still be an economical highway cruiser.
