I am an environmentalist. I want to like the hybrids, but from an overall lifecycle viewpoint, there are problems.
First, what about the disposal of the batteries? I do not know if they are recylible or not.
Second, there has to be a hit on efficency because of the extra weight of two drive trains. And the weight of the batteries.
The only place where the current hybrids might make sense is in a big city with heavy traffic and cool temps. If the AC is on, the gas engine is on. Otherwise, the hybrid can shut off the engine, thus saving fuel and emissions. Hybrids would be optimal for places like Seattle or San Fransisco. In DC, it would be fine 7 months of the year (May through Sept. the A/C is required).
I would take a common-rail diesel over a hybrid. Warren Brown of the Washington Post got 40 MPG in Merd E-Series. Heck, if they were reliable, I would consider a Jetta Wagon TDI over a Prius.
