Way OT: Hourly rate for manual labor...

Okay, I was alittle appalled some time ago when I realized auto mechanics (skilled ones at least) were bring home very respectable incomes (60-80K). I was also thrown back by dealership charging $100/hr or more in labor while even indie's these days charge over $70-$80/hr. I thought I had seen everything until I called a plumber to stop by and do some minor repairs.
$90/hr always rounded in their favor (1 hr and 10 minutes = 2hrs). The guy took home over $300 and spent "2hrs" working (it was closer to 45 minutes of actual work. The rest of the time was lost chatting on his Nextel, running out to his truck, etc). The markup on the parts was well over 200% in some instances. He charged $15 for a $2 kit that you can buy at any hardware store.
When did manual labor start demanding such outrageous pay rates? Where was I when this happened? Oh yea...most likely in school getting an "education" that is so "valuable". Geez, I have 20 years of schooling, a masters degree, work at a very respectable company making what the average person my age makes and its a struggle to make even half what these guys are billing. I understand they have to pay for insurance, health, etc but come on.
No offense to anyone, but the REASON you went to school (back in the day) is so that you WON'T end up being a plumber or something else and have to settle for crummy pay, little/no benefits, reliance on social security for retirement, etc. I'm finding none of this is true. They lead very comfortable lives.
