Okay, I was alittle appalled some time ago when I realized auto mechanics (skilled ones at least) were bring home very respectable incomes (60-80K). I was also thrown back by dealership charging $100/hr or more in labor while even indie's these days charge over $70-$80/hr. I thought I had seen everything until I called a plumber to stop by and do some minor repairs
Why were you appaulded? Most skilled technicians go through a 4 year apprenticeship, at least here in Canada. Speaking from personal experience, in the aviation industry, AME's go through 4 years apprenticeship, and many have BA degrees already. Why? well for one being an AME is a facinating job especially in gas turbines and test cell operations (no 'manual labour' here), and it pays well. THe BA is a benefit in the long run when management opportunities come up.
as some have said yo have to to what you love. I have friend who is a plumber and he spen 4 months in the Canadian arctic (Elsemere Isl I think) doing external plumbing for the Inuit(external because of permafrost). He does well financially, but he surely does not seen the majority of the 60/hr he charges, especially when litre of milk cost $8 up there as all supplies are flown in;-) He too does what he loves to do. He is definately glad when he comes home though!
