As an owner of an '03 Aero, and one before that, I have admired the capacity for Saab to build a car that was competent, had a performance edge, and was realitively thrifty at the same time. It seems to me that the advantages of hybrid drive will outweigh the challenges in the years to come. It would have been great to see Saab/GM as a leader in this field. GM could have leveraged Saab as the "green" brand (a marketing strategy it already does - despite the fact that Saab's "Ecopower" 2.3turbo in my car is significantly dirtier than Honda's ULEV 240hp V6). For instance, GM probably would not have had to buy back EV-1's from Saab owners, given the demographics of Saabista's who would have known what they were getting into!
I put a deposit on the hybrid V6 Accord at my dealer as a place holder - I am dying to drive that car (~ 6sec 0-60mph & 40+mpg on the highway). I may not like it or I may feel that I am being hosed at the price - in which case I can decline. As a lifelong gearhead, ex-motorcycle racer, current mountain biker, and technology geek, I am eager to be part of a future of automotive performance without apologies. Cheap oil is dying quickly, as are the young men and women in armies across the globe who are fighting for access to what remains. The day will come when the phrase "That thing got a Hemi?" will be reserved for the history of Richard Petty and the '60's MOPAR crowd - or just cheap porno.
Peace and sorry if it sounds like a rant
