I traded in my 2000 SAAB 9-3 for a 2004 Prius. I've been getting 45 MPG in mixed driving with heavy A/C use since day one(I'm in Miami, FL). I drive a mixed cycle and usually go about 70 to 75 MPH in the highway. The point of the engine shutting off at times has more to do with emmission reduction rather than saving gas (which of course lowers emmissions.) In fact the PRIMARY goal of the Prius is LOW emission number, a HIGH MPG number is one of many things that the Prius does to reach that goal. As far a safety goes check out the EURO-NCAP score of the Prius! The battery replacement issue won't be one for MOST owners are the warranty is 8 yrs. The cost TODAY for a new one is around $3,000, but that number will most likly drop.
That said, if you are looking for a high performance car, with lots of luxury features, look elsewhere. The Prius, as most other cars are, is aimed at a particular market segment. It competiton consists of the Honda Civic and the Ford Focus and other similary priced and sized cars. Perhaps even the I4 verions of the Accord.
