Our '01 Saab gets the short-trip duty, since my wife works pretty close to home. The mileage sucks, in the low-mid 20s. But go on a highway trip & it gets really good. Seems like our Saab has a bigger DIFFERENCE between stop-&-go vs. highway mileage, compared to the other cars we've had. Maybe that helps support what you saw with your 9³, Randy.
There's a zillion people whose driving profile HAS to include stop-&-go, traffic lights, cities, etc. That's the real world for millions of people who live in/near big cities. If you're realistic about hybrids, they're really good for that. Just because they don't excel at highway cruising, don't sell them short. It's a shame some people claim they cure EVERYthing, because that sets hybrids up for the bashing they're getting from this thread.
Saabs don't cure EVERYthing, either. We all do a pretty good job of overlooking torque-steer, notchy or rubbery shifters, excessive roll, SID reliability...
