Old BMW study - WOT........ A gas engine is most effecient at wide open throttle. Part throttle produces pumping losses from dragging the intake charge past the partially block intake. Ultimate gas mileage records are achieved by running small gas engines at WOT and then coasting.
But full throttle and coasting doesn't really work in a modern automatic car and furthermore, short shifting using very large throttle openings and shifting at very low revs doesn't work either. Or maybe it will work with a Sentronic Saab, hmmmm, I'll have to try it.
Many folks on these BB's seem to indicate that they don't get worse mileage with the sport function engaged. My own theory is that brisk acceleration up to cruising speed is probably a little more fuel effecient than slowly accelerating, but then to switch from that to an economy mode the rest of the time is probably asking too much.
Back in the 80's BMW produced a study that said much the same thing, that brisk acceleration wasn't really wasting gas because of the part throttle pumpling losses of the typical gasoline engine.
