Place an electric motor at (or in) each wheel. No transmission is needed for full time AWD. Use a diesel, Stirling, or maybe gas turbine tuned for electricity generation to provide battery charging and short-term extra electricity. That's about as good as you'll get. The engine would be very efficient since it'll be optimized to operate in a narrow RPM range.
This isn't so outlandish, the military has a version they're studying, the RST-V recon vehicle.
