I get efficient grins with a wide open throttle (WOT).
BMW determined, and advised, years ago, its owners and prospective purchasers, than a moderately firm amount accelertion was more fuel efficient than babying the throttle and accelerating for a longer period of time. AT or manual, probably the same issues, but I expect that letting the torque converter to lock up then pushing it a bit harder will be more efficient. Depends on the implementation. But limiting torque converter will probably be the the biggest gain.
