Lawyers' advice requested... Posted by Clay McNeely [Email] (#497) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Clay McNeely) on Tue, 24 Aug 2004 09:20:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hello, everyone. As most of you are aware, my fiancee' and I will be getting married July 30, 2005. At that time, I will be 20 years of age and my fiancee' will be 18. There are a number of things that individuals under the age of 21 are not able to do, such as checking into certain hotels, purchasing large items (furniture, home, auto, etc.) from particular businesses, so on and so forth. This is going to pose quite a problem for us until I turn 21 several months after the wedding.
My fiancee's grandparents were also under 21 when they were married 40-something years ago. They were able to have a lawyer legally declare them over 21 years of age for reasons such as I previously mentioned. Granted, they still weren't able to do things that were unreasonable, but they were able to prove resonsibility and be deemed "of age". Is this still possible, and if so, what is the process of obtaining this status (who to contact, required documentation, cost, etc.)?
On another note, is it possible to get around these age restrictions any other way? I realize that car rental companies are not able to rent out vehicles to minors due to insurance reasons, which is understandable. I don't see, however, why I am unable to check into a hotel, make reservations, purchase large items, etc. Is there a loop-hole anywhere?
As a point of reference, I am self-supportive and financially stable, as I have been for the past couple of years. I'm hoping that there is some way to get around all of this red tape. If not, we're going to be running into a lot of difficulties this next year...take it all in stride, I suppose. Anyway, thank you VERY much for any suggestions, feedback, and/or concerns. Also, questions for clarification purposes are more than welcome. Drive safely, and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
