I have not had the credit trouble that you describe. I had a credit card with my parents before 18 to establish credit. I despise the student credit cards that the banks use to lure naïve kids into debt.

Your bank should be able to give you a debit and credit card since you do bank with them. If they will not, ask if you can give them a prepaid balance to establish a limit. For example, give them a $1000 for a $1000 credit limit.

Can your parents add you to an account just for the convenience of this trip?

I had one horrible experience in Miami Beach where no one would let me check in under age 21. So ridiculous considering I had driven there my self and as others have said could die for the country. Eventfully I found a nice place and had no trouble. I suggest calling ahead to check the minimum check-in age. You may have fewer choices, but someone will take your money.

The car rental is a real problem. If you work for a company with national rental accounts, then you can rent from 21 with your company ID. Otherwise it’s 25, or find someone who will charge a ridiculous premium due to your age. Under 21, it’s nearly impossible.

It is a shame that the country has been set up to make young peoples lives so difficult, especially those like yourself who are mature and just trying to enjoy their adult life.
