is that while they are objective, they don't necessarily measure problem areas very well. For example, a whole lot of problems in cars today can be electrical, but the individual problems may be random and even rare. And some of them can result in driveability issues--so is it scored as an electrical problem or a driveability probblem? This is compounded by the fact that the average CR reader is probably a fairly typical car owner who has trouble remembering to change the oil and check their tire pressure, much less how to define a problem, even though a dealer may have said what was wrong.
Does a car that doesn't do well in an area bad? No, it just means that out of a sample reported there were electrical problems. This includes non-critical stuff like a switch dying. It may or may not be important. A lot of trouble areas showing below average is a clear warning, but average these days isn't all that bad. And the newer Saabs score well.
Second, Honda and Toyota (and their spin-off brands) have set the bar so high for reliability that everyone else looks like losers. So you can't really compare any Euro brand to the top Japanese marques. And who knows where the domestics fit--it varies. And very honestly, Japanese marques attract a different kind of buyer than the Euros.
In buying my present Saab, I found the information here to be a helluva lot more useful than CR in making a really informed decision.
