I remember reading an article in another mag about his retirement 4or5yrs ago. He was asked about reviewing all those cars and said he could tell when a car was put together well and how it would perform just by looking at it. During those years that he was editor, I noticed that Saabs were frowned on if they were even looked at in the first place. Words like 'quirky' abounded. Obviously not put together well in his opinion.
At the end of the article he was asked what car he had picked for retirement. It was a newly developed Audi A-4. He had liked what he had seen and was confident it was a good car.
I don't think time has proven him right.
Saabs are more complicated than a Honda Civic and most other other cars out there. More complication equals more failure. They also require carefully followed maintenence, as any eurocar. Do all this, and you could have a very reliable 500,000mi car.
I'm on my sixth in 25yrs. Now you know my bias. They have been reliable economic cars for me, but I still have my indie check it out before I buy used.
