I've lived my entire life just outside Boston (born in Cambridge, raised in Belmont, went to BU, now working in Cambridge and living in Somerville) and I really couldn't picture myself anywhere else, except Maine.
This is the best time of the year. Warm days and cool nights, ivy on brick houses turning from green to gold, mornings you can see your breath, smell of woodsmoke in the air...Apple and pumpkin picking...last of the summer corn at the supermarket. The leaves are just now starting to turn. October is when I take the winter bedding out of storage, get my coat dry-cleaned, and put the snow tires on my car. Time to start prepping the house for winter. The actions might be different than in the past, but the rhythms of the year don't change.
Our favorite drive is out through Lexington, Bedford, Concord, and Carlisle. Winding back roads through woods and farms; Saab hugging the turns, sunroof open and turbo singing; sun reflecting off the Sudbury River as you cross the bridge; and a stop at a farmstand for cider on the way home.
Another favorite is Gloucester in the winter. Already looking forward to that...
I'm sure New England misses you, too.
