Probably cost. Lead acid is by far the least expensive battery when high capacity is needed. For electronics, the next choice is nimh or lithium. lithium is good and light, but not as long lasting as other choices in ultracold weather. I would think a information backup battery would be a good thing for cars to have (something to retain your clock and electronics settings when the starting battery is our of service). Heck, my 15 year old radio shack alarm clock has a battery backup for retaining time through power outages.

Probably during testing, a new Porsche design doesn't get a chance to sit around doing nothing for a couple weeks either. It probably gets a pretty intense regimen of use.

There are a LOT of common sense electronics that car and electronics companies don't implement. Perhaps they are held up by patents or something. Like, any car with onstar should be able to set it's own clock. Any cell phone should be able to set it's own clock since the whole cell phone network is dependent on accurate timing and caller ID includes the time in each call. Failing that, atomic clock receiver radios are cheap too these days, no harm in implementing that in car electronics. Time is transmitted on shortwave frequencies for radios and on PBS's VHF TV frequencies for VCRs, therefor any car with an integrated clock and radio (like anything with a SID) should be able to set it's clock automatically, even without GPS. And with the computerization of almost everything in a car, they should be using flash memory instead of battery-backed memory to save important and non-important settings. A lot of settings we have done with tech2 are permanent, but radio stations, seat settings, and such are only battery backed.

If that were my porsche, I'd probably install a battery charger/maintainer on it and plug the car in when not in use. I presume it's safely in a garage where a solar charger would not work well.
