The new car is the 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S. The company term is 997. If you spend some time with the 996 and then go drive the Boxster, they are two very different cars. These water-pumpers are evolved Porsches, just like Saab has done. My first Saab of 25 years ago was quirky, not entirely dependable, but offered safety, performance, comfort and most importantly, utility that we needed with a bunch of small children climbing in and out. Every different Saab model that I've bought since that first one has been more comfortable, faster, more dependable, and less quirky. Now, however, Saab has gone EXTREMELY mainstream in not offering a hatchback. And, I don't consider a 9-2 a viable substitute at this point.
Since you owned a 993, you have to give Porsche credit in sticking to the basic design that made it stand out from the crowd.
And you're absolutely correct.....the 993 was a stunning design. Without argument, the most beautiful Porsche ever manufactured. The 997 mimics those lines much better than the 996 did. Incidentally, I was told that Remus did the research for the exhaust system when the 996 was introduced as a 1999 model. Porsche's goal was to tune the exhaust system as to best mimic the sound of the previous generation's air-cooled engines. It's pretty good, but as they say, "there is no substitute."
